Manicure and pedicure — technique and hygiene

The structure of the nail workflow and hygiene requirements

One of the professional objectives of the education is to be able to perform manicure and pedicure on the basis of nail structure and function and detect contraindications. It is a treatment that looks simple from the outside but requires both technique and sharp hygiene sense because you work close to skin and nails that can easily become infected.

§The structure of the nail

The nail consists among other things of the nail plate itself the nail fold that protects the nail's growth zone and the nail root where the nail forms. If you know the structure you can better assess what is a normal variation and what is a sign of a problem.

§Work process in manicure and pedicure

  • 01Cleaning of hands/feet and nails
  • 02Shaping nails with a file
  • 03Care of the sick elderly and frail is as old as humanity but the organized care profession is young. Here we follow the path from monastic and poorhouse care through the first trained nurses to the modern social and health assistant who is today a cornerstone of the welfare society.
  • 04Possible treatment of hard skin (especially in pedicure)
  • 05Final lacquering or nail treatment

§Hygiene and tools

All metal tools should be cleaned in soapy water and then placed in disinfectant for at least 15 minutes between each client. Use disposable files where possible, and change them or disinfect them thoroughly between clients so you don't transfer pathogens. Also remember to clean surfaces, trolleys, and any UV/LED lamp.

§Know the signs and determine contraindications

  • 01Onychomycosis is the medical term for nail fungus, a fungal infection of the nail.
  • 02Inflammation or strong redness around the nail — stop and assess referral
  • 03Wound in the treatment area — do not treat until it has healed
  • 04Unexplained nail discoloration—refer for assessment by a doctor.

A skilled beautician often notices early signs of problems that the customer would overlook at home.
