Checklist: safe work on cooling system
The fixed steps before opening a pressure-bearing system with refrigerant
Use this checklist as a fixed routine before you work on an installation. The point is that the order is the same every time, so you don't skip a step because the task seems small or you are in a hurry. Always adapt it to your company's own procedure and to the specific refrigerant.
§1. Know the system and refrigerant
Find out what refrigerant the system runs on and what that involves. Is it flammable, toxic, or can it displace oxygen? Read the system's data and safety data sheet before doing anything.
§2. Make the electrical part de-energised
Cut off the power, secure against reconnection, and check that the voltage is actually gone before you work on the control or compressor. A compressor that starts unexpectedly is dangerous.
§3. Manage the pressure in a controlled way
A cooling system is under pressure. Relieve and handle pressure according to the correct procedure so neither pressure nor liquid refrigerant escapes against you. Use the correct equipment to drain and collect refrigerant — never into the air.
§4. Protect yourself

§5. Finish correctly and document
When the work is complete check for leaks fill correctly and note what you have done and how much refrigerant is on. Good documentation is both a legal requirement and a help to the next technician.
