Checklist: preparation for journeyman exam

The Four Parts of the Examination and How to Ensure You Are Well Prepared

The journeyman's exam is typically held in the last school period and consists of several parts. Use this checklist to keep track of what each part requires of you.

§1. The individual theoretical task

  • 01Repeat the cooling circuit, h,log p-diagram, superheating and subcooling
  • 02Practice calculating energy transport and cooling capacity for both simple and special processes
  • 03Know the rules about refrigerants, certificates and legally required inspections

§2. System task (group-wise, practical)

  • 01Practice systematic troubleshooting: understand symptom, read, narrow down, correct, document
  • 02Make sure that you can justify your choices aloud to others in the group
  • 03Practice cooperation — the test also checks if you can work in a group

§3. The individual pipe task

  • 01Practice pipe cutting, bending, and measuring so it's precise in one operation
  • 02Practice hard soldering with silver/phosphor filler material and nitrogen purging
  • 03Check that your tools (pipe cutter, bender, soldering equipment) are in good condition before exam

§4. The oral examination

  • 01Practice explaining technical content in plain language, not just technical terms
  • 02Prepare examples from your own training you can link to the theory
  • 03Talk with your master about what types of systems you have the most experience with
