Form: calculation of COP and SCOP for a heat pump system

How to calculate instantaneous efficiency and seasonal efficiency, and explain the difference to the customer

Use this schedule as support when you need to assess or explain a heat pump's efficiency — either based on your own measurements or from the manufacturer's data.

§Step 1 — Collect basic data

  • 01Measured or specified heat output (kW)
  • 02Measured or specified power consumption for compressor and auxiliary equipment (kW)
  • 03Return and flow temperature at the measurement time.
  • 04Climate zone and standard conditions if you use the manufacturer's SCOP data (EN 14825)

§Step 2 — calculate COP for current moment

§Step 3 — assess SCOP for entire season

  • 01Use the manufacturer's SCOP value from the datasheet if it exists for the system's climate zone
  • 02Compare the stated SCOP with your own measurements of COP under varying conditions
  • 03Be aware that actual supply temperature in the specific house can differ from standard conditions

§Step 4 — explain to customer what numbers mean

  • 01Explain the difference between a snapshot (COP) and a yearly average (SCOP)
  • 02Tell what in their specific house can pull the numbers up or down
  • 03Note the assumptions used so the calculation can be reproduced later
