How the lighting affects how we feel and perform

A structured method to find the fault when a system does not cool

When a facility doesn't cool, there's pressure on: goods get warm, or production stops. This is precisely why a fixed method is worth its weight in gold—it keeps you on track so you don't run around changing parts blindly. Use this approach as a starting point.

§1. Understand what should happen

Find out what the system normally does and what is actually happening now. Isn't it cooling at all or cooling poorly? Ask the customer or operator: what happened just before the problem started?

§2. Read the system

  • 01Check pressure on high and low pressure sides
  • 02Read off the temperatures in and out across the evaporator and condenser.
  • 03Look for error messages on the controller lights fuses and thermostat.

§3. Follow the cooling circuit

A cooling system is a circuit: compressor condenser expansion and evaporator. Think about where in the cycle the problem can lie. Is refrigerant missing is something stuck or is the compressor not working? Work your way through one place at a time.

§4. Test your theory

When you have a suspicion confirm it before you replace something. A measurement showing the pressure or temperature is wrong precisely there is more valuable than a replacement that might help.

§5. Correct, inspect and document

When the error is found and corrected, check that the system is running and cooling as it should—and write down what the error was and what you did, including any refrigerant you added.
