The Four Basic Components and the Equipment You Encounter Again and Again
At first, a cooling system can look like a tangle of pipes, boxes and cables. But most systems are built around the same basic cooling circuit, where four parts work together. When you can see the circuit, the pattern starts to make sense.
§The compressor – the circuit's pump
The compressor sucks and pushes the refrigerant around the circuit and raises its pressure and temperature. That is what makes everything run. Understand what the compressor does and you understand the system's pulse.
§Capacitor and evaporator – where heat is transferred
- 01The condenser releases heat to the surroundings so the refrigerant becomes liquid.
- 02The evaporator absorbs heat where you want cold so the refrigerant evaporates.
- 03The whole point is to move heat from a cold place to a warm place.
§Expansion — the controlling link.
The expansion valve (or equivalent device) lowers the pressure on the refrigerant just before it enters the evaporator and controls how much passes through. This is where the circuit is controlled.
§The refrigerant – the working fluid
The refrigerant is the substance that circulates and moves the heat. There are many types, from natural refrigerants like CO2 and ammonia to synthetic ones. They each have their own properties, pressures and hazards – therefore you must always know what the system runs on.
§The tool you work with
The work includes a pressure gauge set to read pressure, a vacuum pump to dry and evacuate the system, a leak detector, and equipment to solder and recover refrigerant. Labels and drawings help you find your way – without them you're working blind.
