Specialties and career as a refrigeration technician
From supermarket cooling through industry and cold storage to heat pumps and the green transition
Cool is everywhere, and that means a cooling technician can go in many directions. The basic course — the cycle process, troubleshooting and refrigerant handling — is the same, but what you build on top can look very different.
§Commercial cooling
The classic direction is commercial refrigeration: refrigerated displays, freezer rooms and cold rooms in supermarkets, shops, restaurants and food shops. Here reliability is everything — if cooling fails in a supermarket, the shop loses goods for hours. Many in this direction work with service and monitoring of many systems at once.
§Industrial refrigeration and process refrigeration
Another direction is the large systems in industry: cold storage, food production, dairies and process cooling, where cooling is part of the production itself. The systems are larger and more complex, and expertise lies in understanding whole systems rather than individual units. It is technically demanding and often well-paid.
§Heat pumps and the green transition
A heat pump is at its core a cooling system used in reverse: instead of removing heat to cool it moves heat in to warm up. Because heat pumps are a cornerstone in replacing gas and oil heating there is strong demand for technicians who can install and service them. Here cooling trades directly meet the green transition — your knowledge of the cycle becomes part of the climate solution.

§What builds a sustainable career
The craft is built on certificates and practical experience, both of which can be expanded throughout life. With time you can become a service manager, project manager, or self-employed, or you can specialize deeply in one type of system. Those who stay updated on new refrigerants and new equipment continue to be in demand — the cooling craft changes, but never disappears.
