Safety, certificates and rules in refrigeration
Pressure, cold, electricity and refrigerant — and the rules that allow you to work with it
Safety in refrigeration is about two things at once: taking care of yourself and your colleagues physically and working within the rules that apply because refrigerants can damage the environment. Both are equally binding.
§Pressure and gas cylinders
A cooling system stands under pressure and refrigerant is supplied in pressure bottles. Pressure is a serious hazard: a system or bottle handled incorrectly can cause injury. That is why you learn to handle pressure bottles correctly secure them against tipping never expose them to heat and always know the pressure you are working with before you open a fitting.
§Cold and refrigerant on skin
Liquid refrigerant is very cold and can cause frostbite if it hits skin or eyes. Therefore you wear gloves and eye protection when working with connections that may contain liquid. Some refrigerants can also displace oxygen in closed rooms or be flammable so ventilation and knowing the substance is part of safety.
§Open flame and electricity
Soldering with an open flame means fire hazard, hot surfaces and requirements that there are no flammable substances nearby. At the same time, you are working close to electrical components — compressors, controls and sensors — that must be disconnected before you start. Making de-energized and securing against reconnection before you touch electrical, is a basic rule that is not waived.
§Certificates — why you are legally able to work with refrigerant
In Denmark and the Nordic countries especially eternit — asbestos cement for roof and facade panels — became a well-known and widespread material. This is the legacy the profession still encounters today: large quantities of asbestos still sit in buildings from before the bans and it is when these materials are torn down or processed that the danger arises.
§Documentation of refrigerant
Because refrigerants are greenhouse gases, the amount must be kept track of. You note how much you charge or discharge, and it is included in the system's documentation. It is not bureaucracy for its own sake: it is the way society ensures that refrigerants do not disappear into the atmosphere without anyone noticing. Good documentation protects both the customer and yourself.
§Personal protective equipment and order
Daily equipment includes gloves, eye protection, safety shoes and often ear protection. Tidy work areas, secured bottles and control of hoses and cables prevent both accidents and errors. A refrigeration technician who works properly makes fewer mistakes and comes home safe every day.
