From natural ice to modern cooling systems — the history of refrigeration technology
How humanity went from hacking ice in winter to controlling temperature and humidity with technology year-round
As a refrigeration technician you work with something people have dreamed of for thousands of years: making it cold on command. Before refrigeration technology existed food was only durable as long as it could be salted smoked or kept cold with ice. To understand why your trade looks as it does it helps to know the way to it.
§Natural ice and ice cream shops
In the old days, the only cooling people had was what nature itself provided. In winter, ice was cut from lakes and rivers and placed in insulated ice cellars or ice houses, where it could last far into the summer. Breweries, slaughterers and dairies were completely dependent on ice. It was hard work and completely dependent on the weather — a mild winter could mean a lack of cooling throughout the following summer.
§The mechanical refrigeration machine
In the course of the 1800s, people learned to produce cold with a machine instead of fetching it from nature. The basic principle is the same one you work with today: a liquid that evaporates, absorbs heat from the surroundings and becomes cold, and when the vapour is compressed again, it releases the heat elsewhere. That cycle — evaporation, compression, cooling, expansion — is the heart of every cooling system, from a refrigerator to a large frozen storage hall.
§Refrigerants — from dangerous to environmentally friendly
The substance that circulates and absorbs and releases heat is called the refrigerant. Early on people used substances that were toxic or flammable. Later came refrigerants that were easy to work with but were found to damage the ozone layer and contribute to the greenhouse effect. Therefore refrigerants today are heavily regulated and a large part of your trade is about choosing handling and recovering refrigerants correctly so they don't escape into the atmosphere.
§Cool becomes everyone's
In the 1900s cooling came into homes with refrigerators and freezers and it changed what and how we eat. At the same time cooling became a requirement for entire societies: supermarkets food production medicine data centres and air conditioning. Today cooling is everywhere and most of it you don't notice at all — until it breaks. That is where the refrigeration technician gets called.

§What the story teaches a refrigeration technician
Refrigeration has gone from harvesting cold in nature to controlling temperature and humidity with precise technique. Two things have held all the way: the cycle you troubleshoot, and the responsibility that the substance that does the work doesn't harm people or the environment. If you understand both, you understand the core of the field.
