How to take care of yourself, your colleagues, and the environment when working with refrigeration
The cooling trade is full of energy in several forms: pressure in the systems, refrigerants that can displace oxygen or cause cold damage, electricity in compressors and controls, and open flame when soldering. Most injuries do not happen because someone didn't know better, but because a routine task was performed without the last safety steps. Therefore, safety is something you do every time – not just when it's dangerous.
§Pressure and refrigerant
A cooling system is a closed system under pressure. When you open empty or fill it it must be done in a controlled manner so you neither get pressure or refrigerant against yourself. Liquid refrigerant is very cold and can cause serious cold damage to skin and eyes and some refrigerants can displace oxygen in a closed room or be toxic or flammable. You must know the refrigerant you are working with and its hazard labels.
§Hot work and electricity
Soldering and welding are hot work with an open flame — it places demands on fire protection, ventilation and keeping flammable materials away. At the same time, you must de-energize the electrical part before you work on it: disconnect, secure against reconnection and verify that the voltage is actually gone. A compressor starting while you have your hands in the system is a serious hazard.

§Workplaces are rarely a neat workshop
As a refrigeration technician you come out where the systems are: on roofs in technical basements in chest freezers behind a shop's cooling counter or in a machine room with noise and heat. You often work alone or two to a location. This requires you to plan secure your workspace and be able to call for help if something goes wrong.
§Ergonomics and the long run.
Many of the trade's strains show up only after years: back and shoulders from heavy lifting of compressors and installation parts, knees from working low and in tight spaces, and hearing from noisy machine rooms. Use aids for heavy lifting, change working position, and consistently wear hearing protection where there is noise. It feels superfluous when you're young — and that's precisely why injuries strike those who skipped it.
