Yield percentage from stoichiometry

How much should we have received, and what part did we get?

Answer: The theoretical yield of a reaction is found from the reaction equation: the mass of the starting material is converted to moles with the molar mass, multiplied by the ratio of product to starting material in the equation and converted to mass with the product's molar mass. Compared with what you actually got, it gives the yield percentage. Always calculate on the starting material that runs out first (the limiting one).

Formula

n = m ÷ M (kg ÷ g/mol giver kmol; × 1000 giver mol)

n(produkt) = n(udgangsstof) × molforholdet fra reaktionsskemaet

Teoretisk masse = n(produkt) × M(produkt)

Udbytteprocent = faktisk masse ÷ teoretisk masse × 100

The standard values are lime calcination: CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂ (100.09 → 56.08 g/mol, ratio 1).

Does not apply when

  • Molar masses are on the safety data sheet or can be calculated from the periodic table. If the reactant is not pure, multiply the mass by purity first.

Step by step

  • At glemme molforholdet i reaktionsskemaet, fx at 1 mol svovlsyre neutraliserer 2 mol natronlud.

Examples from everyday life

Kalkbrænding i ovnen

Du fylder 100 kg kalksten (CaCO₃, 100,09 g/mol) i ovnen.

Mass of the limiting reactant
100 kg
Output substance molar mass
100.09 g/mol
Product's molar mass
56.08 g/mol
Mol product per mol reactant (from the reaction scheme)
1
Actual mass of product obtained
52 kg

It means: Teoretisk burde du have fået 56.03 kg, så udbyttet er 92.8 %.

Mass of the limiting reactant
250 kg
Output substance molar mass
40 g/mol
Product's molar mass
58.44 g/mol
Mol product per mol reactant (from the reaction scheme)
1
Actual mass of product obtained
348 kg

It means: Det teoretiske udbytte er 365.25 kg, og udbyttet 95.3 %. Stofmængden af NaOH var 6,250 minor.

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer
