Facilities, measuring equipment, and control in industrial production

The machines sensors and control systems you work with — and what each one does

As an operator the system is your tool but it is composed of many parts: machinery that processes or fills sensors that measure and a controller that ties it together. Knowing the parts and their role enables you to set correctly and troubleshoot when something acts up.

§Process systems and machines

The actual production happens in process plants: mixers filling machines ovens presses packing machines or conveyor belts depending on the industry. Each machine has a task in the chain and the product moves from one to the next. If you understand the chain — what happens where — you can trace an error back to where it started.

§Sensors and meters

The facility is filled with sensors that measure temperature, pressure, flow rate, level, weight, and position. Their values are displayed on screens and gauges, and these are what you read to know if the process is running correctly. A sensor showing something unexpected is often the first sign of an impending fault – therefore you learn what the normal values are so you can see when something deviates.

§Control systems and operation

It all comes together with a control system, often with a screen where you set, start, stop and monitor the system. Many systems are controlled by programmable automation that runs fixed sequences. Your task is to select the right settings, watch that the sequence runs as planned, and intervene if the system reports an error or something looks wrong.

§Target groups with special needs

Beyond the installation's own sensors, you use measurement equipment to check the product: scales, measuring tools, perhaps equipment to check purity or content. Measurement equipment must be correct — an instrument that measures incorrectly gives false confidence. Therefore, equipment is checked and calibrated so you can trust the figures.

§Why you need to understand more than the buttons

It is easy to learn which button starts the line. The hard and valuable thing is to understand why the system does what it does — what the temperature means for the product, why speed affects quality, what a particular alarm covers. The operator who understands the process troubleshoots faster and makes better goods than the one who only knows the sequence of buttons.

The buttons can all learn. What makes the difference is understanding what the system does when you press them.
