Titration: the unknown concentration

What is concentration in my sample from titration?

Answer: In a titration, you add a solution of known concentration (the titrant) from a burette, until the indicator changes colour or the pH curve jumps. At the equivalence point, you have added precisely the amount needed for the reaction equation to balance. The calculator goes from the burette reading to the molar amount of titrant, via the molar ratio in the reaction equation to the sample's molar amount, and finally to the sample's concentration in mol/L and g/L. You find the molar ratio and molar mass yourself in the reaction equation and the periodic table.

Formula

n(titrator) = c(titrator) · V(titrator), med V i liter (mL ÷ 1000)

n(prøve) = n(titrator) × molforholdet fra reaktionsskemaet

c(prøve) = n(prøve) ÷ V(prøve). Når begge volumener står i mL, går ÷ 1000 ud: c = c_t · V_t · forhold ÷ V_p

Massekoncentration = c(prøve) × M

Does not apply when

Step by step

Examples from everyday life

Eddike fortyndet ti gange

Titrator concentration
0.1 mol/L
Consumption of titrator at equivalence point
18.4 mL
Sample volume in the flask
25 mL
Mol test substance per mol titrator (from the reaction scheme)
1 : 1 (e.g. HCl + NaOH, CH₃COOH + NaOH)
Test substance's molar mass (to g/L)
60.05 g/mol

It means: Den fortyndede prøve er 0.0736 mol/L, eller 4.42 g/L.

Svovlsyre med to protoner

Titrator concentration
0.1 mol/L
Consumption of titrator at equivalence point
12.6 mL
Sample volume in the flask
10 mL
Mol test substance per mol titrator (from the reaction scheme)
1 : 2 (e.g. H₂SO₄ + 2 NaOH)
Test substance's molar mass (to g/L)
98.08 g/mol

Titrator concentration
0.1 mol/L
Consumption of titrator at equivalence point
16.8 mL
Sample volume in the flask
20 mL
Mol test substance per mol titrator (from the reaction scheme)
1 : 1 (e.g. HCl + NaOH, CH₃COOH + NaOH)
Test substance's molar mass (to g/L)
36.46 g/mol

It means: Saltsyren er 0.084 mol/L, svarende til 3.06 g/L.

Rule of thumb

Halvt forbrug = halv koncentration.

How to check the answer
