The technique subject is in many ways HTX's crown jewel. It is a required subject at A-level that you have in the third year, and according to Danske Erhvervsskoler og Gymnasiers description of HTX, it is precisely this subject that ties together the many things you have learned along the way. Where the technology subject in the first and second years teaches you the problem-oriented working method, the technique subject goes deeper within one technical field — both practically and theoretically.

§Four directions to choose from

The technique subject comes in four directions, and you choose the one that suits your interests and your program. Not all schools offer all four — the offerings depend on the school's workshops, laboratories, and teaching staff.

§From idea to documented product

Regardless of direction, you work in technology with the entire chain from needs and requirements through design and production to testing and documentation. It resembles the approach of the technology programme, but at a higher level: greater demands are placed on the technical and scientific justification of your choices, on the quality of what you produce and on the documentation. You not only need to be able to make something that works — you need to be able to explain why it works and why your solution is the right one.

§How to choose direction

The choice of technical subject comes later in the education than the course line choice, so you have had time to get to know yourself better academically. Think about where you did best in your technology subject's projects: was it at the computer, in the laboratory or in the workshop? Also think a step ahead — the direction can give you a taste of subject areas such as construction, software development, food science or production technology that you may encounter again in further education.

§Why the trade matters afterwards

The technique subject is the closest a secondary education comes to the engineer's and technician's real work: open problems, requirements that must be weighed, and solutions that must work in practice and be documentable. Many HTX students experience that precisely this experience makes the transition to technical and scientific further education noticeably easier — the project form, report writing, and laboratory routine are already a habit.

In technical subjects, the question is not whether you can remember the theory — but whether you can use it to build something that holds.
