§Study material — port and terminal trade

This page brings together the most important concepts from the trade so you have a quick reference when you study or need to explain a workflow. Use it together with the articles and templates.

You should be able to explain this

  • 01How goods move through the terminal: in, registered, stored, out
  • 02Why the container standard is crucial to modern logistics
  • 03What you should know before lifting: weight, centre of gravity and load capacity
  • 04How load is secured so it doesn't shift in any direction
  • 05What machines are used for what goods

Central concepts

ConceptShort explanation
ContainerStandardized case with fixed dimensions and corner hardware
Bulk cargoPLACEHOLDER_43
Piece goodsSingle pieces such as pipes or machine parts
ReachstackerMachine: model identification and operating hours.
SpreaderHandle that engages the container's corner castings
Load securingLashing and bracing cargo so that it doesn't shift
Load-bearing capacityThe maximum load a machine or device is permitted to lift

Safety at a glance

  • 01Wear visible clothing and stay in marked areas
  • 02Always follow the same sequence when a defect appears: material (is it the right, clean and dry?), machine (temperature, pressure, time), and finally mold (wear, ventilation, cooling). If you jump around, you risk changing several things at once and never finding the real cause.
  • 03Know weight and load capacity before each lift
  • 04Check lifting equipment and machine before use.
  • 05Report errors, damage and waste immediately

Check yourself

  • 01Can you name three different cargo types and the equipment they are handled with?
  • 02Can you explain why planning before a ship arrives saves time?
  • 03Can you describe a safe lift step by step?
