Wind and weather stop schedule for crane work
Decision sheet for use before and during lifting when wind and weather are involved
Use this schedule before crane work begins, and continuously during the shift as the weather changes. It is not a substitute for the manufacturer's instructions or the crane's nameplate — it is a checklist for applying them consistently.
§1. Before work begins
- 01Find the crane's maximum operating wind speed on nameplate/manual
- 02Assess whether today's loads are particularly wind-sensitive (flat light or large surfaces such as empty containers flat racks or tarpaulins)
- 03Get current, measured wind strength on site — don't rely solely on a general weather forecast
- 04Remember that weather forecasts typically apply to terrain class 2 (open landscape) — the wind at the quay can be stronger
§2. Assessment of the individual load
- 01Calculate or estimate the load's wind load area in relation to weight — large flat loads require lower wind limit than the crane's normal
- 02If in doubt about the load's wind sensitivity, the cautious limit is chosen, not the most optimistic.
- 03Ensure that the lifting gear is suitable for a load that can move unexpectedly in gusts of wind

§3. When work is stopped
- 01Place the load safely down instead of letting it hang and wait
- 02Report stoppage to planning/office so work flow can be arranged
- 03Note time and reason for stopping – it is used for later evaluation and training
- 04Do not resume work until wind and weather are again within the set limits
