Ship's berth time at quay

How many hours does the ship lie at the dock?

Answer: When a container ship arrives, the planner needs to know how long it stays at the quay so crew, cranes and next call can be planned. Dock time is time for the lifts plus the fixed time for mooring, lashing, paperwork and inspection. Lift time is number of lifts divided by the cranes' combined pace. Use your own net crane rate, i.e. lifts per crane-hour whilst the crane is working. The calculator works out the time itself and shows what an extra crane means.

Formula

Løftetid = løft ÷ (kraner × løft pr. kran-time)

Liggetid = løftetid + fast tid

Kran-timer = løft ÷ løft pr. kran-time (de timer, der skal bemandes på kranerne)

Eksempel: 1.200 løft ÷ (2 × 25) = 24 timer + 3 timer = 27 timer

Validity and source

Source
Quay productivity: lifts ÷ (cranes × net crane rate) + fixed time (UNCTAD key figures for port productivity)

Does not apply when

  • Calculation assumes lifts are evenly spread between cranes. If most containers are at one end of the ship it's the busiest crane that decides. Breaks and shift change without crane work must go in the fixed time or be deducted from net rate.

Worked example

The calculator's own default values inserted. The figures are calculated with exactly the formula the tool uses.

Sådan bruger du den

Du bruger den, når et anløb skal planlægges: hvor mange kraner og hold skal der på, og hvornår er skibet færdigt. Den viser også, hvad en kran mere sparer.

Step by step

  1. Find antal løft i stuvningsplanen.
  2. Vælg antal kraner.
  3. Brug jeres egen net crane rate.
  4. Løftetid = løft ÷ (kraner × rate). Læg den faste tid til.

Typical errors

  • At bruge GCR i stedet for net-rate og så også lægge pauser til. Så tælles ventetiden to gange.
  • At tro at løftene altid kan fordeles ligeligt.
  • At glemme lashing og papirer.

Examples from everyday life

Feederskib med to kraner

Et feederskib skal have 1.200 løft. To kraner laver 25 løft pr. kran-time, og den faste tid er 3 timer.

Total lifts (unloading + loading + shifting)
1,200 lift
Cranes on the ship
2 kraner
Lift per crane-hour, net (your own measurement)
25 løft/time
Fixed time (moorage, lashing, paperwork)
3 hours

It means: Skibet ligger 27 hours, heraf 24 hours løft. Der skal bemandes 48 hours på kranerne. Med en kran mere ligger det 19 hours.

Større skib med fire kraner

Et skib skal have 3.400 løft med fire kraner à 28 løft pr. kran-time og 4 timers fast tid.

Total lifts (unloading + loading + shifting)
3,400 lift
Cranes on the ship
4 kraner
Lift per crane-hour, net (your own measurement)
28 løft/time
Fixed time (moorage, lashing, paperwork)
4 hours

It means: Liggetiden er 34.4 hours. En femte kran giver 28.3 hours, hvis løftene kan fordeles.

Rule of thumb

1.000 løft med to kraner à 25 tager 20 timer.

How to check the answer

Løftetid × kraner skal give kran-timer.
