Checklist: safe handling of chemicals and electroplating bath
Acids, pickling and galvanic baths require proper safety management
Chemicals are part of everyday life in a goldsmith workshop, but they must be handled with respect. Go through the list when you set up your workplace, and use it as a fixed routine in your daily work.
§Documentation and knowledge
- 01Are there safety data sheets for all chemicals in the workshop?
- 02Has a chemical risk assessment been made for processes not covered by safety data sheet instructions?
- 03Does everyone in the workshop know where the safety data sheets are if questions arise?
§Storage and equipment
- 01Are acids and chemicals stored correctly, marked and separated from each other?
- 02Is there effective suction at the source to the galvanic baths and rinsing stages?
- 03Is eye protection, gloves and any respiratory protection available and in good condition?
§Daily routine
- 01Is water never poured into acid only acid into water if dilution is necessary?
- 02Are baths and chemicals only used for what they are designed for, ref. the safety data sheet?
- 03Is there a plan for what to do if spills or splashes occur?
