Alloying down: how much alloy metal?

How much copper should 100 g fine silver have to become sterling 925?

Answer: The alloy calculator raises the fineness by adding pure gold. Here it goes the other way: you have a metal with high fineness and want down to a lower one, e.g. fine silver 999 to sterling 925 or 18 ct to 14 ct. The amount of pure metal doesn't change, so the new total weight is weight × old fineness ÷ new fineness and the difference is the alloy metal you must weigh out. For sterling it's copper. For gold you use an alloy in the colour you want.

Formula

Legeringsmetal = ny totalvægt − vægt = vægt × (gammel ÷ ny − 1)

If the desired fineness is higher than the one you have, the calculator gives 0. Then you need to use the alloy calculator and add pure gold

Does not apply when

  • Calculates without burn-off. During melting some zinc and copper is lost so add maybe 0.5–1 % extra of the volatile as your own experience suggests and check purity before stamping. Law's minimum requirement applies the purity you stamp.

Step by step

  1. Vej metallet, du har.
  2. Skriv dets lødighed nu, fx 999 for fint sølv eller 750 for 18 kt.
  3. Skriv den ønskede lødighed, fx 925 eller 585.

Typical errors

  • At bruge forkert legeringsmetal.
  • At glemme afbrand.

Examples from everyday life

Weight of the metal you have
100 g
Purity of the metal now (e.g. 999 or 750)
999 ‰
Desired fineness (e.g. 925 or 585)
925 ‰

It means: Tilsæt 8 g kobber.

Weight of the metal you have
50 g
Purity of the metal now (e.g. 999 or 750)
750 ‰
Desired fineness (e.g. 925 or 585)
585 ‰

It means: Tilsæt 14.1 g forlegering.

Weight of the metal you have
20 g
Purity of the metal now (e.g. 999 or 750)
585 ‰
Desired fineness (e.g. 925 or 585)
750 ‰

Rule of thumb

Fint sølv til sterling: ca. 8 g kobber pr. 100 g. 18 kt til 14 kt: ca. 28 g forlegering pr. 100 g.

How to check the answer
