The greenkeeping trade today
Where do groundskeepers work, and what does the future look like?
Behind Every Well-Maintained Golf Course and Beautiful Stadium Grass Stands a Greenkeeper or Groundsman. It is a Trade that is Both About Craftsmanship and Biology, and Exists Everywhere Grass and Green Spaces Must be in Top Condition. Here We Look at Where You Can Work and How the Industry is Developing.
§Where do groundskeepers work?
Most greenkeepers work at golf clubs where they establish and maintain greens, fairways and the rest of the course's landscape. Groundsmen typically work with sports and ball fields — for example football stadiums — where the surface must be even, durable and safe to play on. Beyond that there is work with sports facilities and other large green areas where there is need for professionals who can tend grass professionally.

§Demand and job opportunities.
Golf is a widespread leisure interest in Denmark, and courses need maintenance year-round — even outside the playing season. That creates a steady need for skilled workers who can handle the care. As a skilled greenkeeper, you have specialist expertise that is not widely available, and that strengthens your position on the job market.
§Trends that shape the profession
Sustainability takes up more and more space. Demands to use less chemicals save water and care for the aquatic environment are changing the way grass is maintained. At the same time new technology such as GPS-guided machines robotic mowers and sensors are gaining ground. This means the trade is constantly evolving and that a greenkeeper today must both master the craft and understand biology environment and technology.
§Career over time
With experience you can become a foreman or production manager where you are responsible for planning and training new staff. Want your own business you need to be able to run a company beyond the craft: economics purchasing personnel marketing and sales. Many take courses in exactly that before they open their own. Baker and pastry chef mastership is a proud tradition and it is fully possible to go from journeyman to master with your own shop.
“A perfect green does not happen by itself — it is the result of a professional who knows the grass the soil and the weather.”
