Grass species on the course — know your most important material
Red fescue, timothy, ryegrass and the other species that determine the quality of the field
A green a fairway and a football pitch are not just 'grass' — they are carefully composed plant communities where each species is chosen for its task. According to the order on greenkeeper training you must be able to identify different grass species and describe their optimal requirements for growth and soil conditions. It is not theory for theory's sake: choose or maintain incorrectly you get a soft disease-prone surface instead of a dense wear-resistant mat.
§Species on the greens
On greens, two genera dominate: fescue and bentgrass. Red fescue (Festuca rubra) is modest — it gets by with relatively little water and nutrients, has fine, narrow leaves, and gives a tight, dry surface with low maintenance needs. Bentgrass (Agrostis species, both common bentgrass and creeping bentgrass) tolerates very low cutting and forms a tight, even carpet but requires more water, nutrients, and care. Many Nordic greens are sown as a blend of red fescue and bentgrass so the species supplement each other throughout the season.
The third main character on the green is one nobody invited: annual meadow grass (Poa annua). It germinates willingly in holes and worn patches sets seed even at green height and can quickly take over a green. The problem is that it is weak to drought winter damage and disease — a green dominated by annual meadow grass is more expensive and more vulnerable in operation. A large part of modern green maintenance is therefore about giving the desired species a competitive advantage.
§Fairways, tees, and fairways.
On areas with higher cutting and heavy wear, other species are used. Common ryegrass (Lolium perenne) germinates quickly and is very wear-resistant — therefore it is the backbone of most football pitches and is used for continuous reseeding of worn areas. Meadow fescue (Poa pratensis) spreads with underground runners (rhizomes), which makes the turf self-repairing and tear-proof, but it is slow to establish. Red fescue is also included here, especially where low maintenance levels are desired.

§Cutting height and the 1/3 rule
Each species has a limit for how low it can be cut without being stressed. Greens are typically cut a few millimeters during the season, tees and fore greens slightly higher, fairways higher still and semi-rough and rough the longest. A classic rule of thumb in lawn care is that you should remove at most about a third of the leaf mass per cut — if you remove more at once, the plant loses photosynthesis area, is stressed and weakened, and holes in the mat invite annual ryegrass and weeds.
§Growing conditions: soil, pH and nutrients
Most turf grasses thrive best in slightly acidic soil, typically around pH 5.5–6.5, and in a well-drained sandy growing layer. Soil samples are your most important decision-making basis: they show pH and nutrient status so fertilization can be adapted instead of guessing. Here the species differ again — red fescue prefers a low nutrient level while perennial ryegrass and timothy respond to more. If you fertilize a fescue sward heavily, you are actually fertilizing for the annual ryegrass you are trying to keep out. §Control inventory with rechecking
Species composition on a lane is never static — it shifts in the direction favoring maintenance. With regular overseeding you supply seeds of the desired species so they win the race for light and space each time a gap appears in the sward. Combined with correct mowing height measured fertilization and sensible watering overseeding is the strongest non-chemical tool for maintaining a healthy desired grass stand — entirely in line with IPM thinking of preventing rather than fighting.
