How to read a safety data sheet
Understand the chemistry before you use it
Each chemical product comes with a safety data sheet. It tells you what the product is, what hazards it has, and how to use it safely. You do not need to read the whole document — just know where to find the important parts.
§You should especially look for this
- 01What hazards the product has — for example whether it is harmful to health or flammable.
- 02What personal protective equipment you should use — gloves, glasses or extraction.
- 03What you do upon contact with skin, eyes or inhalation.
- 04How you store it, and how waste is handled correctly.
§Danger zone.
On the packaging there are often standardized hazard symbols — the red diamond-shaped marks. Learn what they mean so you can see the danger immediately without looking it up.
