Preparation plan for the journeyman exam

Use the plan as a firm guide in the run-up to the journeyman examination. Adjust the dates to your own process, and always check the current examination basis at your school.

§Months before

• 01Talk with your master about what types of tasks you typically need to be able to solve.
• 02Ask for independent responsibility for a complete task — from measurement to finished installation — while you are still an apprentice.
• 03Review your practice goals and find any gaps while there is still time to close them.
• 04Contact the school if you are unsure about admission requirements or deadlines.

§Weeks before.

• 01Practice documentation and quality control on concrete tasks so it's ingrained.
• 02Review safety equipment and procedures so they are a given during the exam.
• 03Pack tools and personal aids in good time — not the evening before.

§The day itself

• 01Arrive in good time and go through the task calmly before you start.
• 02Work in your usual order: measurement, planning, execution, inspection.
• 03Clean up and document on an ongoing basis — it's easier than collecting it all up at the end.

§After the test

Regardless of the result: ask for feedback from the assessors. You take that knowledge with you as a newly qualified journeyman or on the way to a new attempt — the journeyman test is a station on the way, not the end goal in itself.
