You don't need many light sources to take a good portrait. Start simply and build on it once you have the basics down.
§Basic setup
- 01Place the main light diagonally in front and slightly above the person — it is your most important light.
- 02Place a reflector on the opposite side to soften the shadows.
- 03Use a background light if available so the person stands out from the background.
- 04Ask the person to turn their face slightly towards the main light.
§Fine-tuning
- 01Move the main light closer for softer light further away for harder light.
- 02Check eyes — there should be life and a small reflection in them
- 03Keep an eye on shadows under the chin and nose.
