How to build your portfolio

A strong selection of your best pictures is your most important advertisement

A portfolio is not a pile of all your photos — it's a carefully selected display window showing what you're best at. Even during training you start collecting material for it and it follows you throughout your career.

§Choose with a firm hand

It is tempting to show everything, but a good portfolio is short and strong. A smaller number of excellent images always beats a large number of mediocre ones. Choose only what you are truly proud of.

§Show a red thread

  • 01Collect photos that show the direction you want to work in.
  • 02Make sure that the level is consistent all the way through - a weak image pulls the whole down.
  • 03Think about the sequence so the portfolio has a good start and ending.

§Adapt to the recipient

If you apply for a job at a food studio, the food pictures should be prominent. If you want to take portraits, people should be prominent. You can have multiple versions of your portfolio, which you adapt to those you contact.
