Checklist: safe disconnection before work in network

The fixed steps that make a system de-energized

Making a system de-energized is one of the most important routines in the profession. It follows a fixed sequence so nothing is forgotten. Use this checklist to learn the logic — and always follow your workplace's concrete procedures and your instructor's instructions on the individual system.

§Before you start

  • 01Be sure about which installation and which section should be worked on
  • 02Clarify who is responsible for the system during the work
  • 03Find the right protective equipment and certified measuring equipment

§The disconnection itself — the basic steps

  • 01Turn on the voltage at the right place
  • 02Protect against reconnection so no one accidentally turns on again
  • 03Check with approved equipment that system is actually de-energized
  • 04Ensure necessary grounding according to the system's rules
  • 05Shield any adjacent parts that are still under voltage

§When the work is complete.

  • 01Remove tools and check that everyone is away from the system
  • 02Remove grounding and guarding in the correct order
  • 03Report back to the responsible person before the voltage is applied again

Always check for voltage before touching anything — even if you are absolutely sure it is gone.
