Checklist: preparation before excavation near cables
From LER posting to marking in the field
Excavation work near buried cables requires preparation every single time — even if you have dug at the site before. Use this checklist to ensure no important step is forgotten.
§Before you drive out
- 01Check the LER (Line Owner Register) for the current area
- 02Procurement and suppliers
- 03Contact the network company if the information is unclear or incomplete
- 04Book any professional marking well in advance of the task
§On site
- 01Check physical marking against received conductor information
- 02Use hand excavation or other careful methods close to known utilities
- 03Have first aid equipment and correct protective equipment ready
- 04Inform colleagues and any contractors about the location of known cables
§When the work is complete.
- 01Restore marking and document any changes in routing
- 02Report any damage to third-party cables immediately to the cable owner
- 03Update own documentation if new wiring or cables have been laid
“The cable you never found out was there is the one you are going to dig into.”
