Storm, ice and preparedness — when the weather puts the grid out of service
Why the utilities operator is a central part of Denmark's weather preparedness
Power supply must work whether it's a quiet summer day or a night with hurricane warning. For this very reason the ability to handle extreme weather is part of what a grid operator must be able to do — and part of the reason why large parts of the medium-voltage grid today are buried.
§Why weather is an operational challenge
Air lines, which are still found in some parts of the network, are vulnerable to storms because wind can pull branches and trees over the lines or in the worst case blow over masts. Ice accumulation adds extra weight to air lines and can itself cause cables to break. Heavy rain and flooding can hit transformer stations and other equipment in low-lying areas.

§Preparedness plans and calls
Because electricity supply is society-critical infrastructure, the utility companies have emergency plans for how they can quickly respond and restore operations during storms or other extreme events. This typically involves on-call arrangements and emergency calls outside normal working hours, where operators are called in to locate and remedy faults, often in cooperation with other parts of the emergency response.
§What does it mean for you as an employee?
In practice, it means that as a supply operator, you must be able to engage in a shift schedule and be ready to respond when the weather is worst — precisely when many others stay home. It places demands on physical and mental reserves, but it also gives a strong feeling of making a concrete difference when you and your colleagues get the power back to an entire residential area in the middle of the night.
§The history shows why preparedness matters
The December storm of 3 December 1999 is still one of the clearest examples in Danish history of how vulnerable an overhead cable-based electricity network can be. The hurricane felled thousands of power pylons and left around 200,000 consumers without power for shorter or longer periods — in parts of North Zealand some households were without power for up to a week. This type of event is a central part of the explanation for why Denmark has since invested heavily in laying cables underground and building more robust emergency preparedness around the electricity supply.
Cooperation during extreme weather also often extends beyond the individual network company. During major events, coordination is typically coordinated with the rest of the emergency response including fire and rescue services, especially if downed lines, flooded facilities or toppled trees over roads and cables create dangerous situations for both employees and the public. The cross-functional coordination is an important part of why recovery after major events today typically goes faster than before.
Prioritization during a major incident usually follows a fixed logic: critical societal functions such as hospitals and water supply are typically restored first, then the lines serving the most customers, and finally individual faults affecting few households. Understanding and being able to explain this prioritization is part of what makes an experienced grid operator valuable in a pressured situation where many customers simultaneously want to know when the power is back.
Although neither storms nor bad weather can be planned away preparation can make a big difference to how quickly operations are restored. Updated contingency plans clear shift schedules and well-tested cooperation across grid companies and the rest of the emergency services are what in practice determines whether a storm becomes a brief inconvenience or a prolonged burden for affected customers.
