Checklist: preparation for NDT inspection
Preparation equipment and safety before non-destructive testing
An NDT inspection is only as good as the preparation behind it. Use this checklist before you start regardless of whether you perform the test yourself or assist a certified colleague.
§Before you start
- 01Is the work card and the relevant NDT procedure identified and read?
- 02Is your own certification (Level 1/2/3) valid for this specific method?
- 03Do you know what acceptance limits the result should be judged against?
§Surface and equipment
- 01Has the surface been cleaned and degreased according to the method's requirements?
- 02Has paint been removed if the procedure requires it?
- 03Is the equipment calibrated against a reference sample today?
- 04Are consumables (penetrant, powder, coupling medium) within shelf life?
§During testing
- 01Do you follow the procedure step by step without skipping or changing the order?
- 02Is the lighting (such as UV light for fluorescent penetrant) correct?
- 03Do you note indications on an ongoing basis instead of relying on memory?
§Safety
- 01Is correct PPE in use — gloves, eye protection and any mask?
- 02Is the ventilation sufficient when using chemicals?
- 03Is the area cordoned off if X-ray (RT) is used?
§After testing
- 01Has the area been cleaned of chemicals or powder residue?
- 02Has the result been compared with the requirement from the product data sheet or standard?
- 03Are repairs at least as strong as the surrounding?
