Work process: troubleshooting on an aircraft system

A systematic path from symptom to documented solution

Use this order when a system is not working as it should. It saves parts and time and ensures the solution can be verified.

1. Understand the symptom

  • 01Describe precisely what happens and when
  • 02Look up in the documentation what the symptom could be caused by
  • 03Note the starting point before you change anything

2. Narrow down the fault

  • 01Understand how the system fits together
  • 02Test according to procedure to rule out possible causes
  • 03Don't change parts blindly — find the cause first

3. Remedy

  • 01Use approved parts and prescribed tools and torques
  • 02Follow the procedure step by step
  • 03Note which parts are used

4. Check and document

  • 01Test that the system now works as it should
  • 02Count tools and parts so nothing is forgotten
  • 03Write down what has been done and have it checked/released
