The journeyman's exam for aircraft technicians — how you prepare
Two tracks you must pass: school exam and modular Part-66 exams
To become a qualified aircraft technician is not about one final exam but about passing two parallel tracks: the school's professional evaluation and final practical exam in Danish vocational education and the modular EASA Part-66 exams that must be passed before you can be issued the authorization itself. The earlier you understand the difference the better you can plan your preparation.
§Two things you must pass — not just one
The Danish vocational education is concluded with assessment of performance and a final practical/professional test at your school, just like in other trades. In parallel — and often as an integrated part of the school course at a Part-147-approved school like TEC — you must pass the modular theoretical examinations covering the subject areas (modules) that EASA Part-66 requires for your category (A, B1 or B2).
§How the modular exams are structured
- 01The questions are drawn from a common European question bank (Central Question Bank), so the level is the same across the EU
- 02Most modules are tested with multiple choice questions, some modules are supplemented with a written assignment
- 03Each module must be passed separately — a good grade in one module does not make up for a poor grade in another
- 04Completed modules have limited validity so you need to keep track of the sequence in your course
§Practical experience also counts
Beyond the theoretical modules, Part-66 requires documented practical maintenance experience before the basic licence can be issued. The requirement depends on whether you have completed an approved Part-147 basic course.

At least one of the years must be current experience on the aircraft category you are seeking authorization for — so it cannot just be old experience from earlier in your career.
§After the basic education that gives authorization as a clinical dental technician, one can work as an employee, typically in a clinic with an authorized clinical dental technician responsible. If you later wish to operate your own clinic or participate as a partner in a joint clinic, it requires additional documented experience - typically equivalent to one year of full-time work, calculated as 1,440 hours as a clinical technician assistant - after which you can apply for independent authorization for clinic operation to the Danish Patient Safety Authority.
The Part-66 licence itself does not automatically give you permission to release any aircraft. You need a type rating — an approval to a specific aircraft type obtained through type-specific theory and practical training — before you can act as a certifying staff on that type. Most flight technicians build type ratings throughout their careers.

§Why the sequence of modules matters
Because passed modules have time-limited validity it is not irrelevant in which order you do them. If you plan the course poorly you risk that an early passed module loses its validity before you have collected the rest — and must take it again. Most Part-147 schools including TEC therefore arrange teaching so the modules follow a set order that both builds academically on each other and stays within the validity periods. Your task as a student is to follow that order disciplined instead of postponing the modules you find hardest to last.
It is also worth knowing that the transition from school to apprenticeship does not mean that theoretical preparation stops. Many students experience that the practical experience from everyday life in the company gives the theory they have learned in the classroom a whole new meaning — and conversely, that a good theoretical understanding makes it easier to understand why a given practical procedure is set up as it is. This interplay between school and apprenticeship is the very core of the Danish vocational education model, and it is one of the reasons the course stretches over several years rather than gathering all theory in one long school period.
