How to take care of yourself in a high-precision job
An aeroplane is a large, complex piece of machinery, and maintaining it means you move between chemicals, noise, heavy components and work at height. The working environment is well thought out and regulated, but it requires that you take it seriously yourself every single day.
§Chemistry and emissions
You work with fuel, oils, hydraulic fluids, glue and composite materials. Some substances — such as epoxy and isocyanates — require special precautions, which is why the course in precisely these substances is compulsory already in the basic course. Always use the prescribed personal protective equipment, ensure ventilation and read the safety data sheet before opening a new container.
§Noise and hearing
Hangars and parking places are noisy environments — jet engines, pneumatic tools and background noise from the airport pile up. Hearing damage creeps in and is irreversible. Use hearing protection consistently, even when you just need to do something quickly.

Many tasks take place in awkward positions: in a wheel well inside an engine or lying under a wing. Heavy components must be lifted and moved. Ergonomics is about distributing the load using aids and varying your working positions so your back shoulders and knees hold for many years.

An important part of your professionalism is being able to say no and insisting that an inspection is carried out correctly — even when the clock is ticking. That culture is a strength not a weakness.
