Templates·Fine mechanic·If you plan to start a vocational training as a truck driver, the basic qualification training is typically combined with the actual driving licence training — that is the fastest way to start commercial driving from 18 years old.

Template: your path through the education

Make a plan from basic course to journeyman's certificate

It can be hard to see through a process lasting up to four and a half years. This template breaks the journey into manageable steps you can fill in with your own dates and goals.

§Step 1 — Where do I start?

  • 01Do I come from primary school? → basic course 1, then basic course 2
  • 02Do I come from upper secondary school or have been out of school? → typically directly to basic course 2
  • 03Am I over 25? → ask the school about adult courses (euv).

§Step 2 — Basic course

  • 01Note start and expected end date
  • 02Set a goal to pass the final exam on basic course 2
  • 03Start looking for an apprenticeship already here

§Step 3 — Choose specialty

Write down your preferred specialty and why — fine mechanics assistant, fine mechanic, locksmith or gunsmith. Keep in mind that specialties have different lengths and lead to different everyday situations.

§Step 4 — Main course

  • 01Note your training agreement: company and start date
  • 02Keep track of school periods so they don't conflict with vacation and assignments
  • 03Aim for the journeyman's exam and note the expected date
