The journeyman's exam — how you prepare as a precision mechanic student

After years of school stays and practice, everything you have learned is brought together in one final exam. The journeyman exam is not just another task — it is proof that you can do what your specialty requires, and it is the basis for the journeyman certificate you will need for the rest of your career.
§What does the exam consist of?
The journeyman's exam in precision mechanics is based on the competence objectives in the education notice and the training order for your specialty. It typically includes a theoretical task, preparation of production, manufacturing of precision mechanical individual parts, assembly of a functional unit and quality control of the result. In other words: you must show the entire chain from drawing to finished, inspected part — not just the one part of the trade you're best at.
§When is the test held?
The exam typically takes place in the last school period and is held at earliest three months and at latest six months before your apprenticeship agreement expires. This gives you a window to plan from — but it also means that preparation must really start while you are still in your last practical period, not just when the school invites you to the exam.
§How you prevent accidents, and what to do if one still happens
The exam is graded by master craftsmen — typically one from the employer side and one from the employee side — who assess your performance against the field's competency goals. The grade is given according to the Danish 7-point scale, where the grades from the examiner and master craftsmen are calculated together into a combined grade that is rounded to the nearest point on the scale. So it's not just 'pass/fail' — the quality of your work is directly reflected in the grade.
§The most common pitfalls
Experience from master craftsmen and schools points to some recurring pitfalls: poor time management so quality control is rushed at the end; lack of documentation of own measurements along the way; and overlooking a requirement in the assignment text because you are focused on the machine work itself. The person who reads the assignment thoroughly first — and plans time for control, not just for production — stands significantly stronger.
