One of fine mechanics' strength is that precision parts are used everywhere — in medical equipment, measuring instruments, machines, energy, transport and much more. You learn the basic craft broadly, but from there you can specialise. Here are some of the ways the profession can lead you.
§CNC processing and programming
A central direction is work with computer-controlled machines: programming, setting up and operating CNC machines so they manufacture complex parts accurately and repeatedly. This combines understanding of material and tool with the ability to translate a drawing into a program. It is sought-after work because it merges craft and technology.
§Tool and prototype making
Some precision engineers specialize in making tools, moulds and prototypes – the very precise parts used to make other parts with, or the first examples of something new. It requires great precision and often close collaboration with those who have designed the part. It is a trade for those who enjoy the very precise and the individual.
§Target points require knowledge of industry-relevant insurance and it is not paperwork for paperwork's sake. Occupational liability insurance covers if your work causes the horse or others harm you can be held responsible for.
