A fine mechanics workshop is filled with rotating machines, sharp tools, chips and oil. Safety is not a formality, but what keeps you whole, and it is closely linked to quality: the one who works properly and safely also makes the reliable parts.
§Machine safety — respect for what moves
Rotating machines such as lathes and mills can grab clothing, hair, jewelry and hands before you have time to react. Therefore, fixed rules apply: no loose sleeves, long hair is put up, jewelry and gloves are kept away from rotating parts, and guards are in place. You never start a machine you don't know how to stop, and you keep your hands away from the cutting tool while it's running.
§Personal protective equipment
The eyes are particularly exposed: chips and particles fly, so safety glasses are worn when working. Hearing protection is used where it is strong, and safety shoes protect feet from heavy items and tools. Protective equipment only works when used every time — not just when you remember.
§Order in the workshop
A tidy workshop is a safe workshop. Chips and oil on the floor cause falls tools lying around get pinched and clutter makes you unable to find the right measuring equipment. Tidy up continuously and put things away and you work both safer and faster. Order is not wasted time — it is part of the work.
§Handling of chips oil and chemistry
Chips are sharp and should be removed with a brush or hook, never with bare fingers. Cooling lubricant, oil, and chemicals must be handled according to instructions and disposed of properly, not flushed down the drain. Read the instructions on the products you use and use the protective equipment they require. It protects both you and the environment.
§Quality control
Quality is not luck; it is a procedure. You measure the workpiece along the way and finally against the drawing's tolerances, control the surface, and scrap or correct a part that does not meet the target. A part that looks fine but is out of tolerance is not good. To control systematically and dare to scrap the wrong is the hallmark of a precision mechanic you can trust.
§Traceability and documentation
In many tasks, it must be possible to document that the parts meet the requirements. Therefore you record measurements and keep track of which parts have been inspected. This means that later you can see that the work was in order — and find the error if something turns out to be wrong. Documentation is part of taking responsibility for your work.
