Rules, certificates and responsibility in precision mechanics
What you need in place before you can work
Fine mechanics in itself is not a trade with one big authorization requirement like you know it from electrical and plumbing. But there are still rules, certificates and requirements you need to know — both some that apply to everyone in the education and some that are tied to the individual specialties.
§Certificates you take in the education
As part of the apprenticeship you must obtain a number of certificates before you can move further in the course. They are about being able to work safely in a workshop where there are machines hot processes and electricity.
- 01First aid — so you can act correctly if a colleague is injured
- 02Basic fire fighting — being able to extinguish a small fire and respond correctly.
- 03Work environment and safety during welding and thermal cutting — because thermal processes produce smoke sparks and radiation
§Specialties with additional requirements
Two of the specialties work with things society regulates strictly: weapons and locks. Here comes special responsibility
Weapon technology
If you work with weapons, you move into an area regulated by weapons legislation. This means, among other things, that requirements are made of your character — you must be able to produce a clean criminal record — and that handling, storage and repair of weapons must be done according to the rules. It is a position of trust, and the legislation is there to ensure that weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

As a locksmith you have access to people's homes companies and security systems. Here too conduct is valued highly and you often work closely with rules for security and insurance. Incorrectly installed lock or a broken trust relationship can have serious consequences so integrity and documentation are part of the trade.
§Quality and documentation
Fine mechanics is about hitting very small tolerances. Therefore measurement, control and documentation is a fixed part of the work — you must be able to show that a part has been made within the agreed dimensions. At workplaces supplying to e.g. medical or defence industry, the requirements for traceability and quality control are extra high because an error can have serious consequences.
