Letterbox: active image in frame

How many pixels high is the image, and how high are the beams?

Answer: If the film is recorded or cropped to a wider format than 16:9, it must be delivered in a 16:9 frame with black bars above and below (letterbox). The calculator finds the active picture height at the frame's width, rounded to an even pixel count, as many delivery specifications require, and the height of each of the black bars. You enter the figures as a mask or crop in the editing or grading programme.

Formula

Aktiv højde = rammens bredde ÷ billedformat, rundet til et lige pixeltal

Bjælke = (rammens højde − aktiv højde) ÷ 2

Andel med billede = aktiv højde ÷ rammens højde

If the film's format is narrower than the frame, it's instead pillarbox (bars on the sides)

Does not apply when

  • Gaelder nar filmens format er bredere end rammen (her 1,85, 2,00 og 2,39 i en 1,78-ramme). Nogle tv-stationer og streamingtjenester har egne krav til aktivt billede og safe area, og nogle vil have filmen leveret uden bjaelker. Tjek leveringsspecifikationen.

Når en film i bredformat skal leveres i en 16:9-ramme til tv eller streaming, skal billedet have sorte bjælker over og under. Beregneren finder det aktive billedes højde og bjælkernes størrelse, så du kan sætte masken præcist i gradingen.

Step by step

  1. Skriv rammens bredde og højde, fx 1920 × 1080.
  2. Vælg filmens billedformat.
  3. Aktiv højde = bredde ÷ format, rundet til et lige tal.
  4. Bjælken er det, der er tilbage af højden, delt med to.

Typical errors

  • At strække billedet til 16:9 i stedet for at lægge bjælker på.
  • At få et ulige pixeltal, som giver en grå linje i kanten efter komprimering.
  • At lægge undertekster i bjælken uden at tjekke leveringsspecifikationen.
