Process template: systematic troubleshooting

A fixed procedure that works on motor hydraulics and electricity

§1. Understand the symptom

  • 01Describe the error precisely: what, when and under what load.
  • 02Delineate the system: engine, transmission, hydraulics or electrical.
  • 03Find out if the error is constant or occurs occasionally.

§2. Collect facts

  • 01Visual inspection: leaks wear loose connections oil level.
  • 02Read off the fault codes and operating data with a diagnostic tool.
  • 03Compare with the manufacturer's expected values.

§3. Test and narrow down

  • 01Create a hypothesis based on facts and diagrams.
  • 02Test one thing at a time and record the result.
  • 03Confirm the reason before parts are replaced.

§4. Finish and verify

  • 01Perform the repair according to specification.
  • 02Test run and confirm that the symptom is gone.
  • 03Document cause, work performed and recommendations to the customer.
