Machine types: from excavator to combine harvester
An overview of the most common machines in the trade and what characterises them
Contracting and agricultural machinery trade covers a broad spectrum of machines that on the surface look like each other — they all have motor hydraulics and some form of undercarriage — but which in practice are very different in construction and task. Knowing the main machine types helps you understand what is normal and what is not when you troubleshoot.

- 01Excavator: a rotating superstructure with a hydraulic arm and bucket for digging and moving soil.
- 02Wheel loader: a bucket mounted in front of a mid-mounted machine, used to load and move materials.

§What technically distinguishes the machine types?
A digger typically uses a hydrostatic drive system and separate hydraulic circuits for each function on the arm while a tractor often has a mechanical or powershift transmission combined with a power take-off for tools. A combine harvester is almost a factory on wheels with several separate mechanical and hydraulic systems that must work together in the right sequence — cutterbar threshing mechanism shakers and cleaning.

§Why overview is useful
When you know the typical machine types' structure you can faster decide whether a symptom is normal for that machine or a real fault. Some vibration is normal on a combine harvester during harvest but abnormal on an excavator at rest. You build that experience gradually but understanding machine types from the start makes it easier to put symptoms in proper context.
Regardless of which system you use, the same principles apply: write what you have concretely observed or done – not your interpretation of what it means. Write the time and what you did in response. Use the professional concepts and categories your system provides – they are there not to bother you, but to make your observation findable and comparable for the next person.
