From battery and lights to CAN-bus and sensors
Modern contractor and agricultural machinery contains far more electronics than before. In addition to the classic electrical system with battery, generator and lights, you will today find sensors, control units and data communication that monitor and control engine, transmission and implements.
§The basic electrical system
- 01Battery: supplies power for starting and buffers for consumers.
- 02Generator: charges the battery and supplies the system when the engine is running.
- 03Starter motor: rotates the engine at startup.
- 04Fuses and relays: protect and control circuits.
- 05Consumers: lights heat pumps valves and instruments.
§Sensors and control units
Sensors measure eg temperature pressure revolutions and position and send signals to a control unit. The control unit uses the signals to regulate motor and hydraulics and to give warnings. When a sensor gives an unrealistic signal the machine may go into safe operation or emergency mode.
§CAN-bus and data communication
Many machines use a databus (for example CAN-bus) where control units communicate over a few wires. This reduces the amount of cable and makes it possible to read error codes and data with a diagnostic tool. Understand that a bus line is sensitive: incorrect connection or a faulty unit can disrupt communication for the entire system.

- 03Check chassis connections and plugs — corrosion and poor grounding are common failures
- 04Read off the fault codes and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic tool.
- 05Disconnect the battery's negative terminal for work where a short circuit could cause damage.
Electrical faults scare many, but with a diagram, multimeter and a systematic method most faults can be narrowed down logically.
