Most entrepreneur and agricultural machinery is powered by a diesel engine because it has high torque at low rpm and is reliable under heavy load. As a mechanic you must know the engine's basic principle, be able to read symptoms and work systematically with troubleshooting.

A diesel engine is typically a four-stroke engine. Air is drawn in and compressed powerfully so it becomes very hot. When fuel is sprayed into the hot compressed air it self-ignites — spark plugs like in a petrol engine are not used. The combustion pushes the piston down and drives the crankshaft around then the burnt gases are expelled.

The motor needs clean air in the right amount. A clogged air filter causes smoke and power loss. Many machine motors have turbo that forces more air in and increases performance. Cooling system and exhaust aftertreatment must also function for the motor to run clean and maintain operating temperature.
