Work environment: vibrations noise and ergonomics

The stresses that build up over time — and how you prevent them

Not all work injuries happen with a bang. Some of the stresses a mechanic and a machine operator are exposed to build up gradually over months and years: vibrations from a machine that shake through the seat, noise from engine and hydraulics, and one-sided working positions during ongoing service and repair. The Working Environment Authority has guidance on precisely these stresses, and as a professional you should know the principles.

§Whole body vibrations

When a tractor or construction machine drives on uneven ground, vibrations are transmitted through the seat and cab to the whole body. Over time, this can strain the back and joints. The Work Environment Authority's guidance on whole-body vibrations points out that the risk is reduced by a smooth driving surface, an adapted speed, and a seat with good vibration damping—air-suspended seats typically give the best damping. As a mechanic, it's therefore relevant to check the seat's suspension during service, not just engine and hydraulics.

§Noise in cab and workshop

Motors, hydraulic pumps and tools are noisy, and prolonged exposure to high noise can cause permanent hearing loss. Modern cabs are sound-insulated, but seals and sound insulation wear and should be checked during service. In the workshop, where you work close to running engines or use pneumatic tools, hearing protection is essential for tasks with continuous high noise.

Much of the work takes place in awkward positions: under a raised machine, up in an engine compartment or down at a shaft. Use lifting tables, jacks and other aids to get the component to a working height that does not force you to bend or stretch unnecessarily. Change position regularly, and share heavy lifts with a colleague or use lifting equipment rather than lifting alone.

Vibrations, noise and ergonomics are about the long term. Injuries from this rarely come with warning, but they can follow you for the rest of your working life. By taking them seriously — for both the driver in the field and yourself in the workshop — you take care of a health you'll need for many more years.
