Chemicals, documentation and environmental regulations that come with the product

REACH, WEEE and CE marking from the production floor perspective

You have already learned about the rules on lead-free soldering and the heavy metals that the RoHS directive restricts in the product itself. But there are several layers of rules around you in production — some deal with the chemicals you handle yourself, others with what must be documented about the product long after it has left the factory.

§REACH – when you handle flux and cleaning agents

The EU's chemical regulation REACH sets requirements that chemicals used in production—flux, cleaning agents, and other welding aids—must be registered, correctly labeled, and accompanied by a safety data sheet. The safety data sheet tells you how to handle, store, and dispose of the substance safely.

§WEEE — responsibility continues after sale

Where RoHS restricts what may be in the product while it is used, the WEEE directive takes over when the product one day is to be scrapped. The directive imposes on manufacturers a responsibility to collect and recycle used electrical and electronic equipment so that materials can return to the cycle instead of ending up as waste. This places demands on being able to document which materials and substances a product contains — and that documentation starts already in production, with the data you help to register about components and batches.

§CE marking and declaration of conformity

An electronics product sold in the EU must as a rule bear a CE mark, and the manufacturer must be able to present a declaration of conformity — a document that confirms the product meets the relevant EU requirements, including RoHS. That declaration is built on documentation created during production: which components were used, which processes were followed, and which checks were carried out.

The rules may seem distant from your workstation, but they start and end right there. Without accurate documentation in production, no company can ultimately prove that their products are legal to sell.
