IPC standards in practice – J-STD-001 and IPC-A-610

The two standards that determine whether a solder joint is good enough — and why the requirement depends on what the board will be used for

When you as an electronics operator must judge whether a solder connection is good enough it's not about personal taste. The industry uses two international IPC standards to set a common measurable line: J-STD-001 describing materials and processes and IPC-A-610 describing how the finished result should look. Know them and you can justify your assessment instead of just pointing and saying something looks wrong.

§Two standards that are connected

IPC-J-STD-001, titled 'Requirements for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies', describes which materials and processes may be used – which fluxes and cleaners, which wires and components, and how the soldering of through-hole and surface-mount components must be carried out. IPC-A-610 is, on the other hand, a visual standard: it describes how to check whether the result meets the requirements when the board is finished. The two standards are deliberately synchronized with each other, so an operator following J-STD-001 in the process ends up with a result that passes IPC-A-610 inspection.

§Three quality classes

Not all products must meet the same standard for finish. IPC operates with three classes that reflect how serious the consequences are if something fails and how long the product is expected to last.

§What you look for in a good solder joint

  • 01Fillet form: the solder forms a smooth, concave transition between component and solder surface
  • 02Good wetting (wetting): the melted solder has spread out and bonded to the metal, not settled as a droplet on top
  • 03No solder bridges (bridging): there is no unintended connection between two points that should be separate
  • 04No "tombstoning": a small component has not risen at one end during heating
  • 05Nominal diameter minus pitch

§Certification makes assessment consistent

Because IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 are used by thousands of companies worldwide, there are certifications that make an operator or inspector approved with one company judge according to exactly the same criteria with the next. In Denmark, among others companies such as CB Svendsen and HYTEK in Aalborg offer courses and certification in standards, often at specialist or inspector level. A certification is not just a piece of paper — it is a common measuring stick that makes a customer able to trust the quality, regardless of who did the inspection.

§Why the standards matter for you

Without common standards each business—and each operator—would have their own understanding of what is 'good enough.' This would make it impossible for a customer to set requirements across suppliers, and it would make it difficult for you to explain why you scrap a component. With IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 in mind you can point to a concrete criterion, explain which class the product belongs to, and justify your decision in a way that holds—even when someone asks why.
