How a systematic ESD control program protects components when you can't feel the danger yourself
You have already learned that static electricity — ESD, electrostatic discharge — can damage a component without you noticing it. But ESD protection is not just a wrist strap you put on in the morning. In a professional electronics production, it is a systematic control program, built on international standards, continuously tested and documented.
§Two standards same goal
Internationally, two standards are mainly used to build an ESD control program: IEC 61340-5-1, which is the European and international starting point, and ANSI/ESD S20.20, its American counterpart. The two are technically equivalent and place roughly the same requirements on how a company should organize, train and control itself to protect sensitive components against static electricity.

§Humidity and ventilation
Static charge arises more easily the drier the air. This is why you often feel static shocks in winter when indoor air is dry but rarely in summer. In a production where air humidity cannot be perfectly controlled all year round, it is therefore even more important that grounding connections, mats, and equipment function as they should – they must be able to discharge the charge regardless of what the air does.
§Quality control keeps the program alive.
An ESD control programme that is never tested is just a programme on paper. Wrist straps and mats should be regularly checked to ensure that the resistance to ground is still within the permitted range — a strap that does not conduct properly gives false security. Many companies log these tests systematically, so you can always document that the protection actually worked during the period a product was manufactured.
§Why it is not just a formality
It can feel like bureaucracy to log a test of a wrist strap every morning. But remember what's at stake: a component that has received an ESD shock often looks completely normal and can easily pass the first function test — only to fail when the product is out with the customer. A well-functioning, documented ESD control program is what prevents that kind of invisible, delayed failure.
