Safe troubleshooting on electronic equipment

A systematic procedure so you find the fault without creating a new one

When something electronic isn't working, the temptation is to start tinkering. But the best troubleshooters work calmly and systematically. Follow this order so you avoid both missing the error and causing a new one in the process.

§1. Make it safe first

Before you touch anything, clarify the electrical situation. Is the equipment connected to mains? Could there be charged capacitors? Disconnect, and check with your measuring instrument that it is de-energized where you will work. Safety always comes before speed.

§2. Understand the symptom

Ask yourself – and the user if possible: what does it do, and what should it do? When did the error occur? Does it happen all the time or only sometimes? A precise symptom is half the solution.

§3. Narrow down where the fault could be

Divide the equipment into blocks — supply, input, processing, output — and think about which block the symptom points to. That way you avoid measuring everything and can focus on the area where the fault is likely to be.

§4. Measure, compare, conclude

Measure where you expect a certain result and compare with what should be. A measurement that differs from the expected points you toward the error. Note along the way so you do not measure the same thing twice.

§5. Verify and document

Finally: does the equipment now work as it should — even under the conditions where the error appeared? And have no new errors arisen? Write down briefly what the error was and what you did. This helps you and your colleagues next time.
