Plan for commissioning a sensor and automation system

From first electricity connection to a system that runs reliably

Commissioning is best done step by step — never jump straight to full operation.

1. Before power is turned on

  • 01Is all cabling and installation checked against the diagram?
  • 02Are there no visible short circuits or loose connections?
  • 03Are sensors, control and actuators correctly grounded and ESD-protected where relevant?

2. First electrical connection

  • 01Apply power gradually and check supply voltage first.
  • 02Check that the controller starts correctly without error messages.
  • 03Keep actuators away from load/mechanics on first test if possible.

3. Calibrate and test each sensor individually

  • 01Compare each sensor's measurement with a known reference value.
  • 02Adjust or calibrate if measurement deviates too much.
  • 03Document calibration values and time.

4. Test each actuator individually

  • 01Activate each exit individually and confirm correct physical response.
  • 02Check that the actuator stops/switches off as it should.
  • 03Check for any safety limits and emergency stop

5. Run the system together

  • 01Test the full feedback loop under realistic conditions.
  • 02Monitor the system over time, not just at start-up.
  • 03Complete the documentation and hand over to operations.
