Balancing according to the proportional method

Which valve is the index valve, what should the others be set to, and how much must the fan change?

Answer: In the proportional method, you measure the air quantity on each valve and divide by the projected amount. The valve with the lowest ratio is the index valve. That one is fully open. The other valves are adjusted so they get the same ratio as the index valve. Finally, the fan is turned up or down so all valves hit 100 %. The calculator does this for a branch with three valves.

Formula

Forhold pr. ventil = målt ÷ projekteret luftmængde

The index valve is the valve with the lowest ratio. It stands fully open and is not throttled

The other valves are set to projected × index ratio, so all have the same ratio

The fan's air quantity is changed by (1 ÷ index ratio − 1) × 100 %, so all valves reach 100 %. Air quantity follows the fan's revolutions linearly (fan laws)

Does not apply when

  • When you bleed one valve, the others change a little. So in practice you measure the reference valve at the same time and set each valve so the ratio to the reference valve is 1. The numbers here are the measurements for the first round. Check all valves after, and write the adjustment report.

Step by step

  3. Læs indeksventilens forhold. Den ventil får lov at stå helt åben.

Typical errors

  • At drøvle indeksventilen.

Examples from everyday life

Valve 1: projected air quantity
30 l/s
Valve 1: measured air quantity
24 l/s
Valve 2: projected air quantity
30 l/s
Valve 2: measured air quantity
33 l/s
Valve 3: projected air quantity
40 l/s
Valve 3: measured air quantity
30 l/s

It means: Indeksventilen har 75 %.

Valve 1: projected air quantity
160 l/s
Valve 1: measured air quantity
190 l/s
Valve 2: projected air quantity
160 l/s
Valve 2: measured air quantity
175 l/s
Valve 3: projected air quantity
160 l/s
Valve 3: measured air quantity
200 l/s

It means: Indeksventilen er nummer 2 med 109 %. Stil de to andre ventiler til 175 l/s og 175 l/s. Ventilatoren skal ændres med -9 %, altså skrues ned. Det sparer strøm.

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer
