§Study guidance: Animal keeper

As an animal keeper you build your professionalism on understanding the animals' biology behaviour and needs. Aim to be able to explain why and not just how — then you can adapt care to the individual species and individual animal.

You must be able to do this

  • 01Assess animal welfare based on the five freedoms.
  • 02Feed correctly according to species age and condition and store feed hygienically.
  • 03Perform cleaning hygiene and infection control (biosecurity).
  • 04Observe animals and recognize early disease signs.
  • 05Set up the system and create enrichment that suits the species' natural behaviour.
  • 06Documenting in the logbook and handing over between shifts.
